Mohd Reduan wins Sarawak Closed chess
KUCHING: Abang Mohd Reduan won the 2008 Sarawak Closed Chess Championship on Monday.
He collected seven points to beat 37 other players, including those from Miri, Sibu, Lundu and Selangor.
The runner-up was Leong Zhi Wen with Japeri Reduan and Lim Kian Hwa third and fourth.
The fifth to tenth placers were Morsin Ahmad, Faeznor Razali, Mohd Nasir, Charlene Chai, Abang Zain Azreen and Mohd Amin.
Prizes for 11th to 15th placings in the Youth 16 and below category went to Abang Aminurashid, Ahmad Afiq Afyfy, Naufalrizzam Japeri, Hadi Sharkawi and Nelso Kiu.
Mohd Reduan, Leong, Japeri and Lim will represent Sarawak in the Merdeka Team Championship (Standard) in Kuala Lumpur from August 30 to September 1.
Meanwhile, to promote chess in the Central Region, the Sarawak Chess Association will organise the Medan Departmental Store First Sibu Chess Open Championship from July 26 to 27.
The champion will receive RM400 and trophy, the runner-up, RM250 and trophy and the second runner-up, RM150 and trophy. The fourth player will get RM100 with RM60 each for fifth to eighth placings.
The winners of the Best 18 & under (born on or after 1 Jan 1990) will get RM50 and medal, Best 15 & under (born on or after 1 Jan 1993) RM50 and a medal, Best 12 & under (born on or after 1 Jan 1996) RM50 and medal, Best 9 & under (born on or after 1 Jan 1999) RM50 and medal and Best Woman RM50 and medal.
The entry fee is RM10 while it’s RM5 for the women’s and youth (18 and below) categories.
