Sarawak wushu basks in Sukma XII glory

KUCHING: Wushu Association of Sarawak (WAS) is basking in yet another glorious Sukma outing – this time in Terengganu from May 31 to June 9.

The team of 14 exponents emerged the overall champions with a glittering haul of eight gold, five silver and six bronze medals.

According to WAS, training for Sukma had been going on since January 1, 2007 under China coach Huang Shao Xiong.

The association noted that support from all quarters involved had contributed to the high achievements at the Games.

Ling Soong Hui took over as the Sukma team manager, replacing James Ting Ing Seek who had to relinquish the position after being appointed by Wushu Federation of Malaysia to the supervisory committee during the Games.

Apart from providing wushu training, the association will also offer adult TaijiQuan classes three days a week. Starting July, classes will be held at the Civic Centre here every Saturday and Sunday from 4.30pm to 5.30pm and on Tuesday at Tabuan Laru from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. For details, call 019-8781106.

Meanwhile, Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak will organise the 18th Nanyang Wushu Kung Fu Festival at Wisma Saberkas on June 28 from 10am to 6pm.

More than 250 exponents will be taking part in events like kung fu patterns, cudgel display, broadsword display and sanshou (free sparring).

There will be two categories — senior and junior divisions for men and women.

Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak president Tan Poh Seng will give away the prizes.
