UMS students attend Shell Exploration Games
KOTA KINABALU: A programme aimed at promoting the development and dissemination of information on oil and gas application techniques and related technology was held yesterday at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
Jointly organised by Shell (M) Berhad, HEP, UMS Teams and Geology Club Students, the programme saw some 70 geology students attending the 1st Technical Talk and Shell Exploration Games, yesterday.
UMS vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kamaruzaman Ampon said the programme was held to expose the students to oil and gas exploration and practical application; to build intrapersonal skills and self-esteem as a geologist; and to forge cooperation between the students and Shell representatives.
It was also aimed at promoting cooperation among organisations with similar objectives, he said in a speech during the event at UMS Chancellery Building here.
His speech was delivered by deputy vice chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Amran Ahmed.
According to Kamaruzaman, the Shell Exploration Games, to be held today and tomorrow, is a simulation of the real oil exploration activity where the students are required to interpret seismic data, produce the geological map, present their findings and prepare the project report among other tasks.
“The winners will be presented with a fully-sponsored trip to attend the International Conference on Petroleum 2007 at the Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
During the event, Shell (M) Berhad also presented a research grant to four final-year Geology students to do their thesis projects under the supervision of UMS Geology lecturers.
Also present were Shell (M) Berhad representative Eddy Abdullah and Chairman of the programme, Rodeano Roslee.
