A total 19 institutions of higher learning (IHL) took part in the 3rd Borneo Inter IPT Staff Games which was held at Unimas Kota Samarahan campus from Feb 3 to 8.

KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia of Sabah (UMS) emerged victorious in the 3rd Borneo Inter IPT Staff Games which ended at the Kota Samarahan campus of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) yesterday.

UMS won five out of the 13 sports event contested during the five-day event which started on Feb 3 and the university stamped their mark in the women’s futsal, senior football, men’s ten-pin bowling, netball and the men’s dart competitions.

Hosts Unimas came in second place after having won four events namely in the mixed badminton, men’s futsal, women’s table-tennis and men’s ten-pin bowling.

During the closing ceremony, Unimas vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid commended all the participating teams for their sportsmanship and competition spirit.

“Winning or losing does not matter in this tournament because what is important is that we compete with each other in a positive and competitive sportsmanship spirit apart from maintaining good health,” he said on the event which is aimed to promote friendship among staff members from institutions of higher learning (IHLs) in this region.

It was also announced the next host for the fourth edition of the games will be Universiti Malaysia Sabah (Labuan International Campus) to be held in 2015and a flag-handing ceremony was carried also out during the closing ceremony.

A total of 19 IHLs from Borneo took part in the games including four contingents from Brunei and one from Indonesia.

The participating IHLs are namely Brunei Darussalam University, Sultan Sharif Ali University, Brunei Institute of Technology, Religious Teaching College University of Seri Begawan, Universitas Tanjungpura, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (Labuan International Campus), UiTM Samarahan Campus, UiTM Sabah Branch, Universiti Putra Malaysia (Bintulu Campus), Swinburne Institute of Technology, Kuching Polytechnic, Mukah Polytechnic, Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic, Kuching Community College, Mas Gading Community College, Batu Lintang Teacher’s Training College, MARA Skills Institute of Kuching and Unimas.
