KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leaders have been urged to check their facts before issuing a statement on national security and defence.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was to prevent them from making a blunder and becoming a laughing stock.

“Leave the matter to the professionals who are serving in the police and armed forces,” he told reporters after attending the ministry’s monthly assembly here yesterday.

He was commenting on Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar’s statement that that if the opposition came into power after the next general election, it would freeze intake of fresh police personnel because the 1:270 ratio was more than satisfactory and exceeded international standards.

In his response, Bukit Aman director of management Datuk Mortadza Nazarene said the actual police to public ratio in the country was 1:500 and not 1:270 as claimed by Nurul Izzah, and fell far short of Interpol’s standard which should be 1:250. — Bernama
