15 held for consuming liquor, 11 for committing close proximity

KUANTAN: The Pahang Islamic Department (Jaip) detained 26 people in raids on three entertainment centres early yesterday.

Jaip enforcement chief Ahmad Raffli Ab Malek said 15 people were detained for consuming liquor while 11 others for committing close proximity (khalwat).

He said the 26 detained people, aged from 20 to 55  include two women.

Ops Taubat which involved 40 Jaip officers and the police began at  midnight and ended at 2am.

For consuming liquor, they were detained under Section 136 of Pahang Islamic Administration and Malay Customs Enactment 1982 which carries the maximum RM5,000 fine or three years’ jail and six strokes or both.

For close proximity, they were charged under Section 145 (1) and (2) of Pahang Islamic Administration and Malay Customs Enactment 1982 which carries a maximum RM1,000 fine or six months’ jail or both. — Bernama
