KUALA LUMPUR: The Woman, Family and Community Development Ministry, through the Attorney-General’s Chambers, will assist Elis Syuhaila Mokhtar, 34, reunite with son, Ferris Mokhtar Van De Ven, 5, who was taken to Belgium by her former husband.

Its minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail had promised to help solve the issue.

“This issue involves the laws of two countries. Although there was an order from the Syariah High Court (giving custody to Elis Syuhaila), the child has been taken away.

“I’ve asked the Attorney-General to help Elis Syuhaila so that the son can be returned in accordance with the order issued by the Syariah High Court and I promise to check on this case from time to time,” she told reporters at the Kepong Wanita Umno Aidiladha celebration yesterday.

The Syariah High Court had on Nov 10 given Elis Syuhaila full custody of the boy.

Elis Syuhaila’s former husband, who is the boy’s father, Frank Theodorus Van De Ven @ Firdaus, 40, took Ferris Mokhtar to Belgium through Rantau Panjang, Kelantan on March 5. — Bernama
