Family loses RM65,000 cash, valuables in break-in

KUCHING: A family at Kali Garden in Pending suffered losses amounting to over RM65,000 when two unknown men ransacked their house on Tuesday.The incident happened around 10.30am when the men broke into the house and forced the family into a bedroom before proceeding to ransack the living room.

The men then escaped with roughly RM5,000 in cash and various other items including two laptops, two LCD televisions, four handphones, bottles of liquor, and two Rolex watches.

It was unclear how many family members were present during the incident, or whether the intruders were armed.

A police report of the incident was lodged and the case is under investigation.

In an unrelated incident also on Tuesday, a snatch thief was apprehended by police moments after he had stolen a woman’s purse in Satok.

The incident happened around 4pm when the woman, a school teacher, was making a payment at a parking coupon counter and was suddenly approached from behind by an unknown man.

The man immediately grabbed the teacher’s purse from out of her hands and dashed away on foot as the victim screamed for help.

Fortunately, a police patrol team from the Satok police station heard the commotion and managed to apprehend the suspect following a short chase.

The suspect, a 27-year-old from Semariang, was slightly injured after he put up a struggle and was taken back to the scene where the victim positively identified him.

The purse, along with its contents, was recovered from him and returned to the woman.

A switchblade was also found inside one of his pockets, while his motorcycle, which was parked nearby, was detained for investigation.
