KOTA KINABALU: A local man was yesterday given a three-month jail sentence for showing his private part to a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Penampang four months ago.Magistrate Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim imposed the maximum jail sentence on Mailik Komuning who pleaded guilty to committing the obscene act in front of the girl near a shop at 4pm last July 29.

Jobless Mailik was charged under Section 294 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to three months or a fine or both.

Deputy public prosecutor Uma Devi Balasubramaniam told the court that Mailik approached the girl and showed his private part to her while she was sitting outside her father’s shop.

She said that last Aug 7, Mailik went to the shop again and approached the girl. This time her father apprehended him and handed him to the police.

In pleading for a lenient sentence, the undefended Mailik said he had repented and felt remorse for his crime.

He also said that he is his family’s sole breadwinner.

However, Uma Devi urged the court to impose the maximum jail sentence Mailik had committed a serious offence.

The victim is only 16 years old, whereas father-of-two Mailik should know his responsibility by not committing such an offence, she said.
