Manchester United lie in wait

Malaysia get good Zimbabwe workout before visit of English champions

SHAH ALAM: Malaysia edged Zimbabwe 1-0 to cap their second consecutive win in their second international friendly at Shah Alam Stadium here yesterday.

Defender V. Thirumurugan was the toast of the national side when he struck the only goal of the match in the 38th minute after a brilliant solo run that saw him jinx past two Zimbabwe defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot that slipped through the legs of Zimbabwe goalkeeper and skipper Tapiwa Mafunga.

In their first friendly on Sunday, a blend of young and senior players, coached by K. Rajagobal, whipped Zimbabwe 4-0 at Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras.

The seniors roped in by Rajagobal included Selangor skipper Mohd Amri Yahyah, Kelantan striker Indra Putra Mahyuddin and KL Plus central defender Norhafiz Zamani Misbah.

Having beaten the visiting side from Africa comfortably in the first match, Rajagobal gave an array of young and new players in the squad a chance, by making seven substitutions in the second half yesterday.

The two friendlies with Zimbabwe are part of the national squad’s preparation for their highly anticipated match against English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester United on Saturday at National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

“In the two friendlies, I have fielded all 28 players. Now, I have an indication of who will be playing in the first 11 against the Red Devils this Saturday,” said Rajagobal after the match.

He added that since the match against the English club was expected to be fast and furious, the young players should be ready for the non-stop action on match day.
