PENANG: Penang may not send its contingent to the 13th Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Melaka next year if the sports infrastructure for it is not certified safe.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he had asked the executive councillor in charge to ensure the facilities that would be used were certified safe for athletes.
He told this to reporters after unveiling the Penang contingent’s slogan for the Games, which will be held from May 28 to June 7 next year, here yesterday. He said it was not a question of boycott but “better to be safe than sorry” after what happened to the main venue of the last Sukma in Kuala Terengganu.
The roof of Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium at the Gong Badak sports complex in Kuala Terengganu collapsed at 9.30pm on Tuesday, just slightly more than 12 months after it was opened on May 10 last year.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. — Bernama
