Security guards foil robbery attempt

KUCHING: A machete-wielding man was apprehended and handed over to police after he attempted to ‘rob’ a bank on Friday.

The incident occurred around 3.30pm at a bank in Tabuan Jaya when the lone suspect approached a 40-year-old clerk at the inquiry desk and whipped out a parang before placing the weapon against the clerk’s neck and demanding for money.

However, the suspect’s ill-conceived heist swiftly came to an end when two security guards came up to him from behind and struck his arm with the butt of their shotgun, causing him to drop the parang on the floor of the bank.

Together with a few staff members and customers, the guards wrestled the aggressive suspect to the ground and contacted the police.

The suspect, whose particulars were not disclosed, was taken to the police station for questioning and later detained in the lockup for further investigation.

In an unrelated case, a college student was slightly injured after being knocked to the ground in a snatch theft incident on Friday.

The 19-year-old student was walking alone behind a supermarket at Taman BDC commercial centre around 5pm when two men on a motorcycle snatched her handbag, which contained a handphone, as they rode past her from behind.

The victim chased after the duo as they rode off, but was shoved to the ground by the pillion rider.

She suffered light body injuries and lodged a report at the Simpang Tiga police station.
