Youth suffers serious injuries in road collision

KUCHING: A motorcyclist was admitted to hospital with serious injuries after he was involved in a head-on collision with a van early yesterday.

The 24-year-old victim sustained a gash to his neck as well as broken bones following the 1am collision near Kampung Tabuan Melayu.

According to witnesses at the scene, the accident took place at the foot of a bridge when the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a crash helmet at the time, appeared to have lost control of his machine and veered into the lane of the oncoming van.

The van driver, who is in his 30s, said he was heading back to his house in Tabuan Jaya when he saw the motorcyclist entering his side of the road.

He immediately stepped on the brakes, but it was too late to avoid the collision.

An ambulance called to the scene brought the victim to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) where he is being treated.

In an unrelated crash, a recently married couple and a family member were seriously injured in a head-on collision with another car in Samarahan yesterday.

The 23-year-old husband and his 24-year-old wife, along with the latter’s 22-year-old sister, were travelling in a Kancil from their house in Asajaya towards the city when they crashed into a Toyota Vios near Taman Riveria around 1.30pm.

The crash pinned the trio to their seats and firemen were called in to extricate them from the wrecked vehicle before they were rushed to SGH for treatment. Both husband and wife were reported to have suffered fractured limbs and cuts in the incident while the younger sister escaped with lacerations on her body.

The driver of the Vios was unhurt in the accident.
