Lihan pays tribute to Bala, Balang

MIRI: The Orang Ulu community have produced their share of sports stars for the country and two of their most famous sons in track and field were Bala Ditta and Balang Lasung.

Federation of Orang Ulu Associations Sarawak, Malaysia (Forum) president Lihan Jok who made this observation, said Bala and Balang had shown tremendous sportsmanship when they represented Malaysia in International meets and their achievements would continue to be cherished by the community even though they had passed on.

“The Orang Ulu community can shine in sports as proven by Bala and Balang. They can also shine in the corporate sector as proven Datuk Seri Idris Jala (MAS chief executive officer),” he added.

Officiating at opening of the association’s President Trophy Badminton Championship here yesterday, Lihan noted the Orang Ulu were known for their courage and fighting spirit.

He expressed satisfaction with the achievements of the community in athletics and other sports but assured instead of resting on past laurels, the association would continue to scout for talents and groom them to be champions.

“We can start on a small scale and through hard work, I am confident we will be able to train up champions to bring sports honours to the country,” he said, adding that sports excellence would also enhance the image of the community.

Earlier, he said Orang Ulu athletes could boost their self-esteem through success in sports.

“They can cultivate self-respect, discipline and confidence to help them cope with the challenges of life.”

Over 100 Orang Ulu took part in the three-day championship which started on March 26.

Among those present were Sebastian Ting, political secretary of Datuk Peter Chin, the Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister, Miri police chief ACP Jamaludin Ibrahim, Miri City Council secretary Antonio Kathi Galis, Forum publicity chief councillor Dennis Ngau and Forum Wanita chairperson councillor Kijan Toynbee.
