MIRI: Goh Fui Phing of Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) who secured 16A1s in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) is one of the top students in the state and nation.
“Her straight A1 in all 16 subjects has brought glory not only to herself and her family, but also to the students, teachers and school.
“This has proven that Chinese independent schools ‘boleh’!” commended the school’s chief executive officer Datuk Dr Fong Onn Min when met at the school yesterday.
The head girl of the school had in fact been motivated to sit for 16 subjects by Fong.
Formerly from Krokop Chung Hua Primary School, Goh achieved 7As in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and 8As in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and Chinese Independent School Examinations.
All-rounder student Goh said she hoped to secure a government scholarship to pursue a medical degree overseas.
Following behind Goh was Hii Kah Yung who also took 16 subjects, scoring 12As and
3Bs.
Lesley Lai Hsien Ching, daughter of Miri City Council mayor Lawrence Lai, obtained all As (10 A1 and 1 A2) in 11 subjects taken.
Fong said this was the result of good parental care. Lesley is now furthering her studies overseas.
Her cousin and classmate, Ginny Liew Shiang May, now studying Cambridge A-Level in Riam Institute of Technology, got 10As and 3Bs.
Vivian Kong Sing Ung scored 10 A1s and 1B in the 11 subjects sat for.
RRSS had excellent SPM results as out of the total of 111 candidates, 39 obtained at least five credits and above, and 25 a minimum of five distinctions.
Goh was among them.
“This is the first time I see such fantastic results and I hope that more students of RRSS get such good results in the future,” Fong said.
He attributed the excellent results to the conducive environment and relentless efforts of the teachers and students who were imbued with RRSS’ spirit of ‘If I Want, I Surely Can’, in striving for excellence.
The other outstanding students were Andy Tan Dih Xiang, Arvin Julian Kho Kai Xuan, Chia Kar Lynn, Edmund Tang Tuang Shen, Eleen Law Yi Lin, Goh Pik Cheng, Hudson Agan Yong Twan Tsen, Kiew Shook Ching, Kueh Mei Mei, Lin Mei Na, Pang Yee Fatt, Pui Jin Fatt, Wong Yew Hui, Wong Yew Yan, Yeo Hui Kiat, Huang Chyi Yenn, Connie Kuok Mong Wei, Esther Paya Avit, Tang Mean and Wong Mei Fen.
