Student dies, father may lose eyesight in accident

SIBU: Less than 24 hours to the first day of school, a 34-year-old teacher could be losing his eyesight while his daughter was killed in an accident at Mile 26, Jalan Sibu/Bintulu yesterday morning.

Lucas Alow, the teacher, emerged from the wreckage of his Proton Wira after a head-on collision with a 4WD vehicle, with blood streaming from both eyes while his daughter, Lyana Juli, 15, died on the backseat.

The Borneo Post was made to understand that Lucas and his family had spent the night on Saturday in Sibu at his brother-in-law’s house, after having driven for a good part of the day from Serian where the family had spent the school holiday.

Yesterday, he was driving to return to a school in Dalat, where he is teaching, with his wife and four children — three girls and a boy — when the accident happened around 6am.

Lucas’ wife whose identity was unknown as at press time was said to have complained of chest pain after the accident.

She was then taken to Sibu Hospital where their son had been admitted.

Their other daughters, however, were unhurt.

The Borneo Post was made to understand that Lyana’s body was taken in a police car to the mortuary while the rest of the victims were ferried to the hospital in an ambulance called to the scene.

Lucas’ brother-in-law when met at the hospital refused to be drawn into any conversation except to say that he was shocked.

Meanwhile, the driver of the 4WD vehicle, a middle-age woman, escaped unhurt.

The woman was said to have come from Mile 42 and was on her way to send her daughter to a boarding school at Mile 21 when the accident occurred.

She was detained by police to help with investigation.
