Thai golfers to the fore
KUCHING: Thai prodigy Suradit Yong Charoenchai returned the lowest score yesterday with an impressive 66 in the Boys’ D Group as his country looks set for a repeat sweep in the Chief Minister’s Cup 10th Sarawak International Junior Golf Championships being played at the Kelab Golf Sarawak.
Last year’s hole-in-one winner Jirapat Charoenjitr is keeping pace with his 10-year-old compatriot with an equally impressive 68.
Thailand is also leading in two other categories — Boys’ A where Nitipat Krobteeranon shares top position with Kenneth Christian from MGA on 70 apiece, and Girls’ C where Pailin Ruttanasupagid and Mintra Chimsuti head the pack on 77 and 87.
The Thai boys were easily the most dominant in Group D on the first day with five of their players finishing in the top bunch.
While Suradit and Jirapat occupy the two top positions, compatriots Sarit Suwannarut is lying third on 70 and Warot Phuangmarayat fourth on 75 followed by Run Youprayong on 82, making Group D Thailand’s exclusive preserve.
Abdul Rahim Abang Abdul Rahman from KGS and Jordan Lim from Kelab Golf Miri are the two bright sparks from Sarawak, leading Boys’ B and C respectively.
Abdul Rahim who carded a 74 was six strokes ahead of KGS’ Leonard Chin Jiun Lik who had an 80 while Lim and Thai Smith Teeratrakul share the top spot on 74 each followed by another Thai Dantani Boon Ma on 79.
In the Boys’ Special, Akhmal Tarmizee Nazri (MGA) leads with a 68, keeping him within striking distance of the top individual prize for the lowest score.
Zen Dhamarmaratne from the Royal Colombo Golf Club of Sri Lanka is in second position on 73 in this category while Sarawak-based Korean national Oh Se Joon is third on 76.
Meanwhile, Amanda Chin Xhiee (MGA) recorded the lowest score for the day with a 77 to lead in Girls’ A with Iman Dato Ahmad Nordin second on 78.
