FLASHBACK: Hii caught in the act.

Shafie said when contacted yesterday, that police have called Hii Tiong Huat in to help with the investigation of the case under Section 434 of the Penal Code.

Hii was called in after 11pm on Tuesday and released thereafter.

Shafie said anyone else involved in the suspected act of mischief would also be called in as well.

“We are now studying the case. Therefore, we cannot confirm yet what our next course of action is,” he said.

For the purpose of investigation, the police have taken the two road signs involved as exhibits.

On Monday, Hii told three reporters he had removed the ‘Airport’ sign at Jalan Deshon to reposition it near the airport because, according to him, the road sign at the latter spot was unclear and caused confusion to road users.

Hii said the repositioning of the sign would give better directions to the airport.

His actions did not have the approval of the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

The mischief report was lodged by SMC senior assistant secretary Hii Chang Kee on Tuesday afternoon.

Police are also expected to call in the three reporters who witnessed Hii’s suspected act of mischief to assist with their investigation.

Meanwhile, there is a possibility that Hii may have learnt of the police report prior to his being called in to record his statement on Tuesday night.

Earlier that evening, he had hurried to the spot where he had repositioned the road sign but found it to be missing.

Not knowing that the police had removed it as an exhibit for their investigation, he tried to lodge a ‘theft’ report at the Sibu Jaya police station.
