Big win but a little too late
KUCHING: Sarawak’s 4-1 win over Malacca at Sarawak Stadium on Saturday came too late as they have two away matches left and they have no realistic chance in the Malaysia Cup but coach Ahmad Fairuz Yunus vowed to keep on fighting and try to win the last two matches and see what happens.
Kelantan are top of Group A with 14 points while three other teams Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan Naza and Selangor all have 13 and above nine-point Sarawak.
“Realistically, we are out as the best we can win is 15 points but Kelantan have to win against Terengganu playing a home game but they lost,” said Fairuz.
Terengganu and Selangor both will meet as they both have one game extra having played seven games while NS Naza have played eight times.
Management committee head Zuraimi Sabki said Sarawak should have taken five extra points, which they targeted especially in the matches against Malacca away, Selangor at home and NS Naza at home where they were expected to at least get a point from each game, but lost.
Against Malacca, Sarawak put away four goals - a brace each from E. Piousdinho and Joseph Kalang Tie who had two shots hitting the bar.
Fairuz was satisfied with Saturday’s performance although they played against a weaker side and did not play as well as when they played Selangor and Kelantan away in the two matches Sarawak could have won.
“We played better against Selangor and Terengganu as the two sides were better teams and our players followed the rhythm of the high quality games.
“Against Malacca … even though we won by a big margin and the crowd love to see many goals scored but we should have scored more and our performance was not at our highest level,” said Fairuz.
He also contributed the win to good defensive work with the return from a one-match absence of Samsul Napiah which helped steadied the line while goalkeeper Azizon Kadir also played well.
