KUCHING: The Petronas Sprinta AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship will be held on Aug 9 and 10 at Petra Jaya here due to encouraging response shown towards this motorsport, as well as achievement of championship status.

“During the recent qualifying rounds held in Taiping, Perak and Kluang in Johor, our State rider Ahmad Abdul Kadir did us proud by winning both events under the Wira category, for those under 19 years old,” said Social Development and Urbanisation minister Dato Sri William Mawan during his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly here yesterday.

He added that to select potential new riders, his ministry would collaborate with Sarawak Automotive Motor Sport Association to organise the Sarawak Cub Prix Championship qualifying rounds in Kuching, Mukah and Miri from May to July this year.

His ministry would organise the Sarawak International Triathlon (10th Series) at Brighton Beach in Miri on Jun 21 and 22, and some 300 athletes from Singapore, Thailand, Great Britain, USA, Australia and Canada will be taking part.

Meanwhile, Mawan said the State would be sending 605 athletes to compete in 32 sports, and 147 officials to the Sukma Games in Terengganu from May 31 to June 9.

He said that with meticulous planning, preparations and training, the State was optimistic that the athletes would be able to achieve the target of 74 gold medals.
